The word “care” has been on my mind…

The word “care” has been on my mind this past week, maybe due to the pandemic lockdown. Or the recent social unrest. Whatever, the idea of care for someone or something has taken center stage. As we listen and watch troubling events, it is worthwhile to question what people in general care for, and what each of us individually cares for. Current tension means that people do care deeply about something, even when polarized in their thinking with their others. People on both sides of the conversation truly care! In a way, I’d rather see this than “I don’t care!” Apathy takes us nowhere. As human beings, we can care for purposes higher than our mere survival, built into our DNA somewhere. But is that kind of intense care capable of causing us to not care for one another in the way we should? Current events suggest that this is possible. Psychology tells us that, if we cut ourselves off from others, we actually could become sick, and even die. The same might be true of our society at large. Our social structure can fail. Perhaps we should put a priority on caring for one another first, and allow our “higher purposes” take an important but second seat…at least for a while. Thoughts?
